Lianas, deciduous or evergreen, climbing by branched tendrils. Leaves simple, often lobed, sometimes palmately compound. Stipules usually caducous. Inflorescence a thyrse, leaf-opposed. Flowers 5-merous, pedicellate, polygamous, dioecious, rarely bisexual. Calyx saucer-shaped, calyx lobes minute. Petals united at apex and shed as a cap (calyptra) at anthesis. Stamens 5(-7), inserted at the base of hypogynous disc, opposite to petals, disc usually lobed. Pistil 1; ovary 2-locular, loculi 2-ovulate; style slender; stigma slightly expanded. Berry ovoid or globose, pulpy, usually edible, 2-4-seeded.

A large liana climbing by tendrils. Main stem stout, branches terete, +/- glabrous. Tendrils leaf-opposed, branched. Stipules caducous. Leaves simple; petiole 4-9 cm long, glabrous; leaf blade oval or suborbicular, up to 18 cm x 15 cm, 3-5 lobed, base deeply cordate, notch rounded, margin irregularly dentate, teeth large and sharp, apex acuminate, +/- glabrous. Inflorescence a thyrse, 10-15 cm long, opposite to leaves; peduncle ca. 3 cm long. Flowers inconspicuous, radially symmetric, bisexual, pentamerous, 2-3 mm x ca. 1 mm. Pedicels ca. 2 mm long, glabrous. Calyx shallowly cupulate, green, ca. 0.3-0.4 mm long, lobes 5, minute. Petals 5, dirty white/ white with brownish tinge, 2-3 mm long, united at apex and shed as a cap (calyptra) at anthesis. Stamens 5, inserted at base of hypogynous disc, opposite to petals; filaments filiform, ca. 2 mm long; anthers yellow, oval, 0.5-0.8 mm x 0.3-0.4 mm. Disc annular, lobed. Pistil 1; ovary oval to subglobose, ca. 2 mm long, green, bilocular, 2 ovules per loculus; style short; stigma expanded.

Berry globose to elliptic, very much variable in size, shape and colour.
